CHILDREN'S STORIES

  Sandesh Tamang

My name is Sandesh Tamang. I am 13 years old. I used to work long days in a carpet factory but fortunately a RugMark inspector rescued me one year ago and now I am in school.

My home is in the Sindhupalchowk District of Nepal. My father works as a porter and earns low wages. The economic condition of my family is very poor. Trouble began when my mother fell ill and my father could not support us with his wages.

I started to work in a small hotel as a dish washer which was difficult because I had to wake up to work in the middle of the night. I ran away and then my mother sent me to Kathmandu with a relative to weave carpets in exchange for 2,500 rupees (US$38), which my mother spent on food. I came across more trouble in the carpet factory. I was beaten and treated badly. I wept thinking of the poor condition of my family and my younger sisters and brother. My parents cannot afford to enroll them in school.

I was weaving carpets for two months when a RugMark inspector rescued me on July 11, 2006 and brought me to RugMark-CCSD rehabilitation centre. I was illiterate when I came here but I am now doing well in my studies. I have many friends and the staff loves me. I want to be a social worker and I also plan to support my family and send my sisters and brother to school. I am grateful to RugMark for providing me with this opportunity.
